Diversity, Equity and Belonging (DEB):
Our Culture and Commitment

At the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, diversity is about our unique histories, perspectives, appearances, race and ethnicity, mental health challenges, socio-economic status, physical limitations, age, religious beliefs, and gender identity/sexual orientation.

Diversity, Equity and Belonging

We honor the human experience.

We understand that equity matters - that all of us can build and refine the solutions the Policy Center is uniquely positioned to provide, and together we can change the trajectory of maternal mental health.

Equity Matters: there is no judgment about differences allowed here.

Our culture thrives on creativity, innovation, collaborative relationships, and impactful solutions. Anyone who has a passion for our organization can have a seat and speak at our table.

Everyone belongs here.

Our DEB Vision

A culture where all feel heard and respected, even when opinions differ.

Our DEB Mission

To make diversity, equity, and belonging permeate in how we work every day.

Our Strategy

We recruit diverse and talented team members and a board of directors who are madly in love with who we are and what we do.

We continuously train and support our team and directors on the role of unconscious bias and how to recognize it and combat it in ourselves and others. We challenge each other to recognize blind spots, and we offer outside professional support when needed to help us work through stickiness.

We remind our team and directors to come to the table with:

  1. An open mind.

  2. Using “I statements” when noting preferences, ideas, and concerns.

  3. Using “we statements” after voices have been heard, processed, and a decision has been made.

  4. Food (it never hurts to have a meal together, talk and enjoy each other personally!).

We honor the human experience here.

Judgment about differences is not allowed here.

Everyone belongs here.

We wish to have fun here.
