Inaugural Maternal Mental Health State Report Card (2023)

The inaugural Maternal Mental Health Report Card provides the first-ever comprehensive view into the state of maternal mental health in America.

The U.S. is failing mothers – only scoring a D grade. Just one state has received the highest grade of a B-, and 40 states and DC received Ds and Fs.

The report card grades states in three domains:

  1. Providers and Programs

  2. Screening and Screening Reimbursement

  3. Insurance Coverage and Payment

Up to three points are provided for each of the 17 measures within these domains. See how your state ranks in this year’s Report Card.

As of May 12, May 31, and June 28, 2023, 9 states had updated grades - adjusted to account for data corrections relative to three measures: number of Community-Based Organizations, identification of 3 state task forces formed, and one state mandating screening. There are now 40 states plus DC receiving Ds and Fs. Note that grades will not change again until May 2024. Please click here for more information.
